Doll-sized kanekalon is softer and more delicate than generic kanekalon doll hair. It is often used for puppets because of its smooth look and because it can be easily styled using heat.
Kanekalon is used by Mattel for their play lines, while saran is preferred for collectors editions. There are exceptions, however, for which the respective other hair is used.
